“Are universals “precious stones of thought”? Are they tools? Are they constellations of stars that help people lost in the night to orientate? Or are they tarot cards?
The world of universals is an unfinished project. Real people live in its ruins. Universals can be represented as buildings that are still being worked on and also as benevolent ghosts that wander around the globe and hope to be born. Universals need a lot of fortune” Alexander Kluge.

Doubt Staircase

On the occasion of Art Night Venezia 2024, Palazzo Diedo introduces a new artwork by Carsten Höller included in JANUS exhibition.

Carsten Höller (1961, Brussels), has designed a permanent and functional artwork at Palazzo Diedo, the Venice Inclined Oval Staircase, which will be unveiled at Palazzo Diedo on 22nd June 2024. Transforming an original unfinished staircase in the 18th century Palace, the spiral staircase features metal balustrades, Vincenza stone and marmorino marble, all joined by metal frames. Accessible to visitors, the artwork will serve as a practical link between the main floors of Palazzo Diedo.
The structure of the staircase is inclined at a 5° angle, a tilt that is just enough for someone to notice, but too small to be obvious, creating doubt when stepped on, a characteristic that’s recurring in Carsten’s work.

-

German artist Carsten Höller lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden, and Biriwa, Ghana. He has a doctorate in Agricultural Sciences, a knowledge of the scientific working method that he adopts in his artistic activity, although to subvert its basic rules. He conceives art as a cognitive tool and uses his works to transform the sensory and emotional experience of individuals, he wants to disorient and provoke the viewer, altering traditional perceptive mechanisms by creating situations and experiences, which instead of providing certainty instil doubt and make people lose their bearings.

"Taking Venice" recounts the events that led Robert Rauschenberg to win the Grand Prize for painting at the Venice Biennale in 1964 - the first American artist to do so.

The documentary unearths archive reports and footage, and features interviews with key players in a bid to untangle the machinations behind the artist's victory. Taking Venice aims to highlight how America's involvement in the 32nd Venice Biennale, by way of the United States Information Agency, was actually a political project. In fact, at that time the United States was engaged in what has been termed the Cultural Cold War. Exhibitions and magazines, artists and writers, universities and museums were leveraged to highlight distinctive American traits such as freedom of expression and individualism.

At Rome’s gates an ancient house overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its grim owner trumpets patriotic
slogans from its terrace while the local priest shoots anything beyond his comprehension. Joined
by a choir of African immigrants peasants indulge in Hegelian thinking while the donkey Balthazar
lays out a philosophical discourse on man and nature.

MIDAS’ ANTS is a cinematic research for the crystallisation points in human history at which our
ideas of nature have transformed. Represented by amateur actors whose roles, based on their
own characters, are intertwined like vignettes, a dream world unfolds. The 75’ film untangles the
dichotomy human/nature with playful seriousness, but surely will make you laugh.
