Palazzo Diedo – Berggruen Arts & Culture is pleased to host the screening of Frank Auerbach: Life and Death, a film following the life of the German-British painter (Berlin, 1934 – London, 2024). The film traces the artist’s story, rising from an orphaned refugee childhood to his attainment of international acclaim. This intimate documentary film was written, produced, and directed by the artist’s son and frequent sitter, Jake Auerbach. Jake Auerbach’s films, including subjects such as Titian, Walter Sickert, Lucian Freud and Paula Rego, have been screened and broadcast around the world.

Frank Auerbach: Life and Death debunks many of the myths surrounding Auerbach’s life, myths which continued to be perpetuated even in the painter’s obituaries. The film brings together a lavish selection of Auerbach’s paintings, enriched for the first time by a recently discovered archive that includes family photographs and never before seen early work. This imagery is interwoven with the three major filmed interviews granted by this fiercely private man, revealing the truth of a remarkable life.
