Join us for An Unfinished Conversation, an informal discussion honoring the British conceptual artist Ceal Floyer (1968–2025) and her selective retrospective, Unfinished, on view at Palazzo Diedo, Berggruen Arts and Culture from May 4 to November 22, 2026.

This gathering brings together co-curator Jonathan Watkins, artist Thomas Demand, and director Mario Codognato—all of whom closely knew Floyer’s work and spirit—to share personal reflections and celebrate her lasting practice among friends and colleagues.

The trialogue will explore her exceptional knack for intervening lightly in everyday situations, playing with context to test the slippage between function and implication, the literal and the imagined, illustrating how these minimal interventions—variations in scale, slight spatial displacements, wordplay, and nearly invisible alterations—provoke a subtle, profound reading of reality itself.

The exhibition takes its title from Unfinished, a video work first exhibited in Venice in 1995, and includes a selection of pieces ranging from her earliest works to her most recent. Through her mixed-media works, the show reveals her consistent, impassive humor, subdued repetition, and profound capacity to transform an overlooked object or gesture into an epiphany.

Educated at London's Goldsmiths College, Floyer spent much of her career living and working in Berlin, developing a highly influential practice. Her work earned her prestigious honors, including the Preis der Nationalgalerie für junge Kunst in 2007 and the Nam June Paik Art Center Prize in 2009, and was featured globally at Documenta 13, the 53rd Venice Biennale, and Manifesta 11. Alongside major solo exhibitions at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Museo Madre in Naples, and Museion Bolzano, her celebrated pieces are preserved in the permanent collections of foremost global institutions, including the Tate Modern, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
