The film, loosely based on Daniel Farson’s The Gilded Gutter Life of Francis Bacon and released in 1998, charts a short period of the Irish painter’s life, focusing on the turbulent and passionate relationship between Bacon and George Dyer, his lover, tormentor, victim, and model. Set in the bohemian demi-monde of 60’s Soho, Love is the Devil captures the decadent underworld of artists as well as the mercurial and contradictory qualities of Bacon.
Featuring Derek Jacobi, Tilda Swinton, and Daniel
Craig in his breakthrough role, the film was featured at the Cannes Film Festival and Edinburgh International Film Festival, earning various accolades.
