Berggruen Arts & Culture and Berggruen Institute Europe are pleased to present The-exchange-value-of-language-has-fallen-to-zero, an exhibition by Joseph Kosuth at the Casa dei Tre Oci, Venice, opening on 28 March 2026.

Born in 1945, Kosuth is one of the pioneers of Conceptual art, placing language at the heart of his practice, both as content and as subject. His celebrated neon works and textual installations explore how meaning is shaped by the context in which it appears, revealing language as never neutral but always influenced by its environment and reception, an idea that runs throughout his entire career and that is rooted in the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein.

The exhibition spans over fifty years of work: from early pieces of the 1960s, such as One and Three Mirrors (1965), in which image, object and text merge into a reflection on meaning and identity, to A Chain of Resemblance (2026), a new large-scale neon installation based on a text by Michel Foucault, created especially for the entrance of Casa dei Tre Oci. The show is completed by seminal works including The Fifth Investigation (1969) and Text/Context (1978–1979), which investigate themes of authorship and the relationship between language and context.

Kosuth and Venice share a history spanning decades: the artist has participated in eight editions of the Art Biennale and has left a permanent mark on some of the city's most important institutions such as Fondazione Querini Stampalia and the renowned Mario Baratto lecture hall of Università Ca Foscari Venezia.
